Upcoming Events: Thanksgiving, Fall Conferences, Stamp Card Party

posted Nov 23, 2012, 7:43 AM by Kristi Knaub

With Thanksgiving break upon us, students and parents have several upcoming events to keep on their radar:

11/21-11/23 NO SCHOOL
Extra Credit Opportunity:  Historical Inquiry Assignment: What really happened on the "First Thanksgiving" and how do we know?  Students who can determine the single primary source that was created in 1621 that describes this event, as well as compare and contrast the information they learn from it to their prior understanding, are able to earn up to 5 points toward their process grade, as well as a full stamp card!

11/29 and 11/30 PARENT TEACHER (STUDENT) CONFERENCES

Students should have brought home their conference time confirmation forms on Friday, Nov. 16th.  Please return these as soon as possible so that I know you are able to attend your scheduled conference.

As a sixth grader, your child plays an essential role in our fall conference and should come with you to the school at your meeting time.  Leading up to the conference, students will be writing reflections upon themselves as learners, and setting goals for the remainder of the school year.  I feel that the process of student-led conferences provides students with an authentic setting and purpose to present their work, as well as holds them accountable for their learning. Students will be present for the first portion (about 5 minutes) of the conference; however, they will be asked to wait in the hallway for the remainder in order to create the opportunity for open parental discussion and/or questions.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this process.

FRIDAY, 12/6 STAMP CARD PARTY- BOWLING!!!!

Throughout the school year, students have been working to earn stamps for demonstrating positive behaviors that meet our school behavioral system, known as ROAR.  Teachers recognize students for their actions that relate to...
 Respect
 Organization
 Attitude
 Responsibility

Students who earned at least 64 stamps (4 full stamp cards) will get to participate in the 1st Trimester Stamp Card Party; we will go bowling on Friday afternoon.

It's Declamation time!!! All students in 6th-8th grade will be writing a history-based research paper in conjunction with the Gallatin County 61st Annual Declamation Contest, which will be held on Thursday, April 26th.  All students will be required to conduct research and compile it into a polished expository piece of writing; however, a select four students will be chosen to participate in the oral competition, which will take place at the Gallatin County Courthouse.  Eight students will be selected to submit their work to the written competition.

Due dates for the Declamation research process have been posted on the 6th grade news calendar.

The sixth graders have been busy!  Here is what we have been up to recently…

In Social Studies, the sixth graders have just finished a multidisciplinary unit on Ancient Greece.  One highlight included our simulation of the first documented Greek Olympics- including the pentathlon, armor races, and chariot races (on our scooters, of course!)  We had to make some modern-day adaptations to the events for our classrooms, but overall it was a great success!

To extend our studies of Greece to communication arts, the sixth graders also performed 4 traditional Greek myths in readers' theater groups.  As in traditional Greek theater, the students created masks to exaggerate the emotions of their characters.
