Hopefully you and your family had a wonderful Easter Break!!!!  We are returning to a full and eventful week.  The one thing we all need to watch out for is this week ends on Friday the 13th - creepy!!!.
This week the 3rd graders will be reading realistic fiction story called Ramona Quimby, Age8.  It is a classic story about a girl who has to write a book report to share with her class.  We will be continuing using our focus skill of cause and effect to help us comprehend our story.  Remind your child that good readers look for cause-and-effect relationships as they read.  In phonics this week we are learning about accented and unaccented syllables and the schwa.  Words with more than one syllable, one of the syllables is accented, or stressed, more than the other.  For example, e-nough'.  Last week in grammar we were focusing on present-tense verbs, so this week we will be looking at past-tense and future tense verbs.  This week we will be writing a persuasive paragraph.  Look for your third grader to have a topic sentence that states their opinion.

Vocabulary Words: individually, affordable, presentation, effective, clutter, mentioned, beckoned, flustered, remark, visible

SPELLING RULES:

Final E Rule:  You drop the e from a word when the next morphograph begins with a vowel letter.

Doubling Rule:  You double the final consonant when the word ends CVC and the next morphograph begins with a vowel.

In math this week the third graders will be introduced to the lattice method of multiplication.  If you are unsure about this method, please ask your third grader or stop in for a quick lesson - it's really cool!!!

We are continuing working on simple machines.  This week we are studying the screw, the wheel and axle, and the pulley.
